James Umpherson

James Umpherson is the Managing Director of Integrated Economic Solutions Inc. (IES), a development firm that helps small communities integrate economic solutions into the broader development landscape. James is a successful economic development specialist and is a leading researcher in economic development capacity building modelling, policy process, and Northern development. He has an undergraduate degree in Economics & Political Science, a master’s degree in Economic Development, and has completed doctoral course work and research in Northern Development, Public Policy and the Economy. James has spent the last 20-years working with a cross-section of local, regional, and national governments; Community Future Development Corporations; Chambers of Commerce; First Nation economic development organizations; and community based economic and business agencies. His work with communities, government, and private industry has included facilitating development initiatives in a diverse capacity. These initiatives range from community development through community opportunity and tourism plans, business development and creation, labour outreach and employment training, accessing funding for community economic development initiatives, leading the process of community strategic planning & implementation, First Nation governance and institutional development, and policy and planning research.
