Branding New York City as a Leader in the Fashion Industry

New York City is the center of the fashion industry. As home to some of the world’s top fashion schools, high-end retailers, textile manufacturers and wholesale companies, New York is the premier place for well-known fashion designers to showcase their collections.

During New York Fashion Week, designers, models and stylists work around-the-clock to prepare for their shows. With dozens of parties and special events in Manhattan, the glitz and glamour of New York Fashion Week attracts thousands of visitors each year.

Shopping establishments and restaurants also get a boost in their revenue during fashion week. According to Fashionista blog, New York Fashion Week has brought in millions of dollars in revenue to New York.

Branding New York’s Fashion Industry

The mayor of New York and some of the city’s fashion leaders have launched several initiatives designed to build revenue and employment within the fashion industry. Fashionista reports that the plan to build the fashion economy in New York has been labeled as the Fashion NYC 2020 program.

By providing ways for retailers, fashion marketing firms and public relations firms to establish their businesses and set up job placement programs to attract college graduates from fashion schools, the initiative is aimed at helping to increase the employment market and revenue of the fashion industry economy.

The New York City Economic Development Corporation and the Council of Fashion Designers of America, or NYCEDC, has also initiated a plan to build the fashion manufacturing industry in New York City. The NYCEDC is an organization that helps promote the success of local businesses. It also works to promote the economic growth of the city. The Council of Fashion Designers of America, or CFDA, is a trade and fashion networking organization that connects clothing and accessory designers to one another.

The plan to build the fashion manufacturing industry is designed to foster alliances between fashion designers and manufacturers, allow for the production of apparel designs to become a more profitable sector of the fashion industry and promote New York City’s brand as a leader in the fashion industry. According to the NYCEDC blog, the NYCEDC and the CFDA will reward local manufacturers with grants, workforce training programs and equipment upgrades to help grow their businesses.

Leader in Fashion Education

In addition to a range of fashion companies, New York City has also home to some of the top fashion schools in the world, like Pearsons School of Design, Fashion Institute of Technology, Pratt Institute, Kent State University and Academy of Arts University.

According to NYCEDC, an estimated 900 fashion companies have headquarters in New York. Additionally, 180,000 people are employed by fashion companies, representing 6 percent of New York City’s workforce. New York City is also a leader in fashion tradeshows and is home to several thousand showrooms. New York City provides a wide range of career opportunities for fashion designers, stylists and other key figures in the industry.
