Abandonment, authenticity, and transgressive placemaking

Kelly Bennett writes on the connections between authentic places, abandonment, and a new wave of placemaking.  Is there a need for abandonment to create more authentic places in cities?  In a recent project, the Wanderlust School of Transgressive  Placemaking completed a reimagining of public space inside a water tower on top of an abandoned building in Manhattan.
