Food processing #1 in Ontario
Andrew Redden, Ec.D.(F) / October 2, 2012
According to the Alliance of Ontario Food Processors, farming and food processing in the Province of Ontario is now the number 1 industry.
An economic impact analysis that they recently issued claims that food processing as well as farming creates more than $50 billion a year in revenue, whereas motor vehicle manufacturing generates $43.6 billion. The report also shows that there are more jobs in the farming and food processing sector than in motor vehicle manufacturing.
The other interesting bit of information is that despite the economic downturn, Ontario’s food and beverage sector, and agriculture sector, experienced growth according to the report. It appears these sectors are more recession resistant than other manufacturing sectors. As I outlined in a previous post, craft beer is even on the rise.
It’s more than 100 pages long, but you can read the full report here.
